Are La Spaziale Single Boiler Machines?
La Spaziale Machines are a single-boiler espresso machine, but better! Unlike their thermosyphon counterparts, La Spaziale have patented their design to pull the temperature in-consistent single boiler machines into new realms.
Traditional single boiler machines
Traditional single boiler machines rely on the brewing water for espresso extraction dipping into the main steam boiler in a pipe. The boiler water is therefore heating the brewing water. The problems that can occur with this system include a machine that is susceptible to issues with scale. Scale on these pipes can lead to cooler brewing water and a sour, thin tasting espresso. Not only this, but the temperature of this brewing water is affected by the amount of use a machine is getting at any one time. The longer the machine sits idle, the hotter the water can get. Vice versa, during a busy period, the brew water might not have enough time in contact with boiler water to reach the desired temperature. The result? Inconsistent tasting espresso.
So how do we combat this temperature inconsistency without the need for entirely separate boilers which can be less budget friendly?
La Spaziale Machine's Patented Design
La Spaziale's design is quite clever. The brewing water is separate, it does not move into the steam boiler; quite the opposite actually. The steam from the boiler is used as the heating element for the brew water. The beauty with this is steam's temperature is incredibly stable and the brew unit remains at a consistent temperature due to this. With this in mind, La Spaziale machines due to this design, tend to run a little hotter than we like in the UK market. This is where the the option of Independent Temperature Control (ITC) comes in. This clever system allows for the mixing of cold water into the brewing water in a set measure. This gives a consistent way of controlling the temperature of your brewing water inline with your recipe to ensure you are extracting the best flavours from your coffee. The advantage of this design is that the price of La Spaziale machines can be more cost effective than a true multi-boiler as the technology to do this is less expensive than separate heating elements. This means we can offer a well-priced machine with the ability to control temperature.
Scale Build-up
It is also worth mentioning that another advantage to using steam to heat the brewing water is that there is no scale in steam, so the likelihood of scale affecting your espresso brewing temperature is reduced. Therefore a machine with less engineering issues that will last longer. (It's worth mentioning we're hoping the avoidance of scale build up in the steam boiler entirely though water filtration of course!)
Conclusion
So yes, La Spaziale machines are single boiler espresso machines, but their unique design has ensured that you can achieve temperature consistency similar to that of a multi boiler machine, at a price point that is more affordable. Genius!
